Thank you to Digital Evangelist for the props in the 28th Carnival of the Mobilists. Check out what's happening under the mobilist big top this week.
There's an interesting common thread about text messaging that ran through several of the blog entries highlighted this week. Not included in the Carnival was Kitty Weldon's post "Will Messaging Surpass Email as the Killer Business App," which definitely got me thinking about messaging this week and also deserves a read. She asks why there are still only 10 million users of mobile email (out of 1.2 billion inboxes in the world today) and suggests an answer:
While the blame may be laid on the expense of smartphones and data plans, as well as the complexity and fears of breached security by IT managers, there is another reason: the kinds of workers that need remote communication the most tend to be field workers in technical support and delivery/logistics positions – for these workers email may be overkill, better suited to white-collar professionals and affluent prosumers.
I think she may have a point there. I've been saying for some time that I think the big opportunity in extending enterprise mobility is not at the white collar end but the blue collar end.
Also note that there is a new "home base" for the Carnival of the Mobilists: http://mobili.st.
